The first in a series of twelve, Poldark is a tale of fortune and love lost and regained.  Set in the mid-to-late 1700’s in Cornwall, England, the central character of the book, Poldark, returns from fighting the war in America to find his father dead, his estate in extreme disrepair (and being occupied by drunken servants), and his sweetheart, for whom he had lived to return home, engaged to his cousin.

It would seem circumstances must improve from there, and they do, but by a very serpentine route.  Fans of the Masterpiece Theatre production of the book will greatly enjoy learning the background of events that happen in the series while readers new to the story will become hooked on discovering the next occurrence in the book.  Lovers of historical fiction will not be disappointed either!
