Despite never read Anthony Doerr before, I went into his new novel with high expectations given everything I had heard about his work and his status as a Pulitzer-prize winning author. However, even those expectations were surpassed by this beautiful work. Tying together multiple narratives, this book explores "genre" in a way that eschews convention in favor of exploring the ways in which the human experience remains unchanged through time or even genre category. Nevertheless, fans of myth, historical fiction, contemporary fiction, thriller and science fiction will all find something to make them happy here, and maybe even gain a greater appreciation for the ways in which the themes of each can be reflected across other types of writing. The novel concerns itself with the edurance of story and the stewardship of the Earth, a novel of our times and the distant past and future simultaneously. A novel of emotion and human beings over high concepts. A novel that will stay with me for a long time to come.
