I absolutely adored My Sister's Big Fat Indian Wedding by Sajni Patel! I've loved her adult novels, so I already knew I was in a for a treat. Reading this book felt like watching a Bollywood movie or watching a dramatic Indian TV show. I loved the descriptions of the food and customs, many of which differ for me since I am from a different part of India than the author and the characters, although there were many similarities. I love how Sajni explained not just so many customs, but also the familial expectations Zurika and Naveen face in regards to what they should do with their lives. I also really loved how she included some of the issues that face the Indian community as a whole, especially colorism.
Most of all I loved Zurika and Navneen. I loved how Zurika pursued her dreams, how she was with her family who were also her friends. I loved how Naveen fell so hard for Zurika and how he both challenged and supported her. Also the Damani cousins are pretty amazing, they really helped support Zurika in a way that only those who love you do. Speaking of cousins and family, the dynamics shown are really well done. Both the good, and the bad. Zurika has a wonderful family, who loves her, and while they may not always support her intially, it was wonderful to see them rally around her.
My Sister's Big Fat Indian Wedding is a wonderful read. It has romance and drama, but does it in a way that both entertaining and enlightening. It's perfect for yound adult readers and adults alike. I would absolutely love it if Sajni Patel wrote another book or story featuring Zurika and Navneen sometime in the future, just to see how things go between them.
