I haven't read a friends to lovers romance in a very long time. I'd forgotten how good they can be, especially when written well. Avery and Declan's relationship is enviable and solid. I loved seeing how they were there for each other and their comfort with each other. Plus I love how the change in their relationship from platonic to romantic was slow and not sudden. It really felt like they were taking their time. Not to mention it isn't flawed. Dec does mess up, but he steps up.
While I love how sexy the book is, it's not as steamy as what I've come to expect from Helena. There is sex, but it's not on the page and that really surprised me, especially since there is foreplay that is described thoroughly (Lucky Avery!). Beyond that, I really enjoyed the rest of the book. Beyond the friendship between Avery and Declan, I really love how they tackled the issues they faced, both as individuals and as a couple.
Another highlight of this book are the well developed the friendships and sibling relationships. I loved how Avery and Declan's friends were there for them and I absolutely adored the other two Spark sisters, London and Harley and sincerely hope they get their own stories too.
When Sparks Fly has a lot of emotional depth and chemistry that makes for a well rounded story. It's not an angstfest, nor is it a total rom-com, but it finds the balance and makes for a wonderful read.
