Sarah’s Rating

This book sparkles like champagne bubbles and sequined flapper fringe. I love it so much, I reread it every year. Fitzgerald's 1925 classic is a story of the riotous excesses of the Jazz Age and the disillusionment that followed. Nick Carawary moves to a small house in a fashionable area of Long Island, and makes the acquaintance of his dizzyingly wealthy neighbor Jay Gatsby who harbors a mansion full of secrets. Written about his own generation's obsession with gin, sex and money, Fitzgerald lays out a memorable cast of characters that at once attract and repel. Even though the book is getting close to being a century old, it still feels decidedly modern, and is the kind of book you can go to again and again.
